Balkans Outreach '93
This September, seventy-seven participants (sixty-nine from Britain,
seven from the USA & one from France) travelled to Greece for
three weeks of outreach.
Those travelling by air suffered a nine hour delay because their plane
was being used for a UN humanitarian flight! They eventually flew
to Greece with Icelandic Airways.
The outreach started with two days of orientation at the Lighthouse
Centre in Piraeus, Athens. After this the teams set off to five mission
locations in Greece & Albania.
A team of thirteen remained in Piraeus to worked alongside five churches.
Despite occasional heckling from cafe owners, several people made
commitments every day as a result of the preaching. Follow-up is being
handled by the local churches.
The team in Mylotopos helped with a church-planting project in Edessa
& an outreach in Giannitsa. It was not unusal to see crowds of
200 stop at the open-air meetings. Many people came night after night
to hear the Gospel.
Twenty team members sailed to the Island of Kos. Children's programmes
were held in "Freedom Square" & open-airs took place by the harbour.
There were many tourists about and the team were therefore able to
put their considerable language ability to good use. Visits were also
made to the prison, and it was even possible to arrange a twenty-five
minute television appearance!
In Erseke, Albania, the team built on the achievements of Project
Resurrection, which had renovated a school & undertaken much evangelism
earlier in the year. The first children's open-air attracted 240 children!
Other activities included youth meetings, door to door visiting &
Bible studies in homes & the hospital.
